All great leaders do this…

April 27, 20265 min read

At some point, if you stay in business long enough, you get smacked in the face with a truth that changes everything.

Your job is not to do the work.

Your job is to build the people who do the work.

And until that clicks… you will stay stuck.

Busy. Stressed. Overwhelmed. Needed for everything.

Sound familiar?

Most business owners think they need better systems, better marketing, better tools.

And yes, those things matter.

But they are not the real constraint.

The real constraint is you.

More specifically, your ability to build people.

Let me explain.

Early on, you are the business.

You’re the best salesperson.
You solve the biggest problems.
You make the key decisions.
You put out the fires.

That’s normal.

But what got you here will absolutely destroy you if you don’t evolve.

Because at some point, doing more yourself stops working.

You hit a ceiling.

And that ceiling isn’t your market.
It isn’t your product.
It isn’t even your team.

It’s your leadership.

This is where most people get it wrong.

They try to scale output instead of scaling capability.

They try to do more instead of becoming more.

And that’s why they stay trapped.

The shift is simple, but not easy.

You stop asking:
“How do I get this done faster?”

And you start asking:
“Who can I build to do this better than me?”

That one question will change your business.

Because every time you coach instead of jumping in and fixing…

You are building capacity.

Every time you slow down and explain the why, not just the what…

You are building thinking.

Every time you give someone ownership instead of hovering over them…

You are building confidence.

And confidence is where performance lives.

Let’s get brutally honest for a second.

Most leaders say they want empowered teams.

But their actions scream control.

They jump in too early.
They correct too quickly.
They hold onto decisions too tightly.

Then they wonder why their team doesn’t step up.

You trained them that way.

You trained them to wait.

You trained them to ask.

You trained them to stay small.

That’s not a people problem.

That’s a leadership problem.

If you want bigger people, you have to become a bigger leader.

And that starts with one uncomfortable shift.

You have to let people struggle.

Not fail catastrophically.

But struggle enough to grow.

Because growth doesn’t come from being told what to do.

It comes from figuring it out.

With your guidance, not your control.

There’s a big difference.

Let’s talk about leverage, because this is where it gets exciting.

A great product can scale.

A great system can scale.

But a great leader multiplies.

And multiplication beats scaling every day of the week.

If you build one great salesperson, you get more sales.

If you build five great salespeople, you get exponential growth.

If you build leaders who can build other people…

Now you’ve created something very dangerous in the best possible way.

Now the business grows without you.

Now you’re not the bottleneck.

Now you’ve bought back your time.

This is how you escape the small business prison.

Not by working harder.

Not by adding more tools.

By building people.

I’ve seen this play out over and over again.

Average businesses with average products outperform their competitors simply because they have stronger leaders and better cultures.

Why?

Because people drive everything.

They drive sales.
They drive customer experience.
They drive innovation.
They drive improvement.

If your people grow, your business grows.

It’s that simple.

Now here’s the part most people skip.

They don’t invest enough time into their team.

They say they’re too busy.

Too many emails.
Too many jobs.
Too many problems.

So coaching gets pushed.

Training gets delayed.

Conversations get shortened.

And slowly, the business starts to stall.

Because the very thing that would unlock growth… gets ignored.

If you want to win, you need to flip that.

Your number one priority every single day should be developing your people.

Not when you have time.

Not when things slow down.

Daily.

That might look like a 10-minute coaching conversation.

It might be giving real, specific feedback.

It might be asking better questions instead of giving answers.

It might be recognising someone publicly for a win.

Every one of those moments matters.

Every one of those moments compounds.

And over time, something powerful happens.

Your team starts thinking differently.

They take more ownership.

They solve problems faster.

They bring you solutions instead of issues.

And one day you realise something incredible.

You are no longer needed for everything.

That’s not a threat.

That’s the goal.

Because now you can focus on higher-value work.

Strategy.
Growth.
Vision.
Opportunities.

The stuff that actually moves the needle.

Let me give you a simple framework you can start using immediately.

Before you answer any question from your team, pause.

Ask yourself:
“Is this a teaching moment or a doing moment?”

If it’s a teaching moment, slow down.

Ask them what they think.

Guide them.

Stretch them.

Build them.

If you keep doing this consistently, your team will level up fast.

And here’s the kicker.

When you genuinely believe in someone before they believe in themselves…

You change their trajectory.

That belief is fuel.

It gives them permission to step up.

It gives them courage to try.

It gives them confidence to grow.

And when people grow, they don’t just improve their performance.

They improve their life.

That’s real leadership.

Not just hitting targets.

Not just growing revenue.

Changing people.

That’s the game.

So here’s the challenge.

Stop being the hero.

Stop being the fixer.

Stop being the bottleneck.

Start being the builder.

Start having better conversations.

Start giving more ownership.

Start developing your people every single day.

Because when you do…

The return is not linear.

It’s exponential.

And it will surprise you.

If you’re serious about building a business that grows without you…
If you’re tired of being needed for everything…
If you want a team that performs at a high level without constant supervision…

Then it’s time to step up as a leader.
